Allied Industrial Engineering covers a wide field of fabrication and has the capability to handle projects of any size and complexity. The AIE fabrication team are highly skilled and knowledgeable with materials, welding procedures and everchanging codes. The fabrication team have done it all, from hydro and geothermal turbines to ancillary equipment, valves, penstocks, pressure vessels and much more. The AIE workshop has everything the team needs to work with difficult materials through pre-heat. Where required third party inspectors are welcome.
Greater Control and Customisation Through Manufacture
When complex and specialised components are needed it can be expensive and time consuming to bring them in from offshore. The replacement of the entire plant will be even more complex. But a manageable alternative is to manufacture whole pieces of equipment or components with AIE.
Norske Skog came to AIE when a steam turbine began showing the effects of prolonged chemical contact. Geothermal steam has many impurities that gouge steel. After 20 years of use turbine blades were failing and the company was facing a minimum two month shutdown; longer if unforeseen issues were found. The fix was to have AIE manufacture an entirely new turbine rotor through reverse engineering the existing one.
Prior to getting started, AIE engineers carried out detailed studies of the existing rotor and developed a special software program for balancing its blades. The materials, machining, balancing, and fitting were all triple checked as part of AIE’s commitment to getting it right first time.
Rather than a two month shutdown installing the newly manufactured rotor took 13 days. And the efficiency gains were immediately evident with increased output from the turbine of 1.5MW. The manufacture of the new rotor saved Norske Skog at least half the cost of a replacement turbine.
